Memoir
Writing Myself Into Being involves early childhood sexual abuse. There is no looking away, no euphemism, no curtain of discretion. To tell my story in full, I present scenes of that abuse—as well as explicit scenes of adult sex between men.
My story of abuse exposes the extreme trauma of early childhood sexual abuse; articulates the profound impact it had on my adult sexual and intimate life; reveals a will to live that could not be extinguished; unmasks the elaborate defense mechanisms that both saved my life, yet also compromised and stole more of it; exposes my pervasive shame to a light that banishes it; shows how a stolen life can be recovered, how a disembodied life can be re-embodied.
It’s a universal story of a journey to wholeness and authenticity.
Few men write about their childhood sexual abuse, and no one, as far as I know, has written about abuse that began when they were younger than five.
My memoir is an untold story, a story only a few could tell.
I remember what most survivors of early childhood sexual abuse never remember. A lifetime of therapy allows me to understand its impact on my adult life. I’ve reached a place of no shame and can tell this story without looking away or hiding.
And I’ve become a powerful writer, I have a voice.
I shout into the silence, a clarion call to society. I shine light into darkness, a beacon for other survivors.
